The return to Memlok: a Difficult choice. 20-21 Feb 2027

The return to Memlok: a Difficult choice.

The recent battles at Memlock have become a nexus, the system has drawn the attention of the Kabal, the group working towards what they believe to be the galaxies best outcome from the Horus Heresy.

Agents of the Kabal have been despatched en masse to attempt to steer the conflict towards the most favourable of outcomes.

Bristol Vanguard’s first 2-day Horus Heresy event, with 5 games of 2,500 points being played over the weekend of the 20-21st February 2027.

Unlike traditional 30k events, there will be three factions taking part in this conflict

Loyalist servants of the Emperor of Mankind

Traitor servants of the Warmaster Horus Lupercal

Servants of the Kabal.

The Story

The War on Memlok is at a stalemate both side thinking they’ve won. The tired and blooded forces return to the bulk landers to return to the ships in a quiet reserve that warriors feel after the battle. As they disembark onto the fleets in orbit they realise something is off; the men that gave their lives are among them again as if it had been a training event and not a true battle, lost for words they return to billets and await further orders.

On the bridges of the command ships a holographic image appears; it’s the planetary governor

“Lords you came to Memlok to fight for the powers you follow be that the Emperor or the Warmaster. I give you all a third choice a power that fights for life against powers beyond, return and show your allegiance to the side you feel will be the right choice, Memlok awaits your return this time it will be to the death and not for the camera’s”

Ships starting to translate out of system find themselves stuck back in orbit as they translate, some manage to escape and new ships appear. Floating in the immaterium above Memlok can be seen an oddly large, diffracted object unlike any seen by either side larger than even the greatest of the battle barges present occasionally as the suns light catches it the edge of a crenelated tower can be seen.

As the ships settle and ready there forces, an envoy arrives on each one with further information about the new force in play the enigmatic Kabal

Event specifics

Primary missions will take inspiration from the journal missions, combining both end of turn and end of game scoring to reward balanced army building and fun lists.

There will be a Cage fight during/after lunch on day 2 where warlords will battle to determine the greatest duellist of them all!

Vanguard run our 30k events with an expectation (if not outright encouragement) that newer players to the system attend as a way to ease into the 30k event scene, this means that whilst having a fully painted army is highly recommended, it is not a prerequisite for the event.

Keeping in mind that there may be some newer players in attendance we plan 3 hours for each game to be completed, with timings able to be adjusted should all games finish earlier.

Who are the Kabal?

There will be a limited number of tickets available with the classification of:

Loyalist (Kabal) and Traitor (Kabal)

These players will keep their true loyalty to the Kabal secret from other players on day 1, with their true loyalty made known on day 2

This means that the Kabal will move in secret within both the Loyalist and Traitor forces, their scores in the primary missions will still contribute to the overall event result in terms of a Loyalist or Traitor victory, but their secret mission is all that truly matters to the Kabal.

How the Kabal players perform on day 1, determines how the next days narrative will move, favouring one side or the other. True to a faction that is weak willed and under the influence of Xenos, the Kabal players will not be aware of the consequences until they happen.

THIS MECHANIC IS INTENDED TO CREATE A DEGREE OF IMBALANCE IN THE LATER GAMES, SO PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND.

Painting

Whilst not essential, all players should attempt to have their forces painted to a Battle Ready standard.

In keeping with the inclusive nature of the event, painting awards are on offer for:

Favourite Squad (a single infantry or cavalry unit);

Favourite Single model (a single model from the army that is not a vehicle)

Favourite Vehicle (a single vehicle model from the army)

These 3 awards will be awarded based on public vote.

In addition, a Best Army award will be judged by the Vanguard Committee/Event Organiser team.

Conversions and proxies
  • Conversions should be of an appropriate size for the rules used (i.e. not using a Rhino chassis for a Land Raider)
  • Weapons modelled should be consistent in appearance (i.e. all lascannons should look the same) across the army.
  • Whilst the event is not strict WYSIWYG (nobody will be checking for modelled pistols and melta bombs), you should ensure that the main armament of squads and vehicles are correct (no proxies of plasma cannons as missile launchers on a HSS for example)

If in any doubt or if your army is highly converted, and to avoid any potential issues at the time of the event, please email the club with any questions and pictures of examples ahead of the event, so the event organiser can provide a ruling .
